Fulham Vs Portsmouth
Saturday 31st January 2009
Venue: Craven Cottage
Kick Off – 15.00
Fulham climbed to 9th after a 3-1 victory over Portsmouth at Craven cottage, while Portsmouth stay in 15th and are without an away win since November.
The game started cagey but it did not take long for Fulham to take the lead after Andy Johnson slotted Fulham ahead after 11 minutes, following a lovely through ball from Clint Dempsey, which saw the former Everton striker slot the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. Distin probably feels like he could of done a lot better after failing to play Johnson offside.
Pompey’s best chance of the first half fell to Younes Kaboul, when he hit the Fulham crossbar following a Jermaine Pennant corner, Mark Schwarzer barely moved and Fulham went in at half time 1-0 up.
Tony Adams then bought on David Nugent at half time and he was denied what looked like a stonewall penalty after he turned on the six-yard lined and was clipped by Pantsil. Alan Wiley waved away the protests.
Pompey pushed and pushed Fulham but self destructed on the 71st minute as the Pompey defence decided to try and play offside in the Fulham half. Eric Nevland then raced clear and slotted the ball home to put Fulham 2-0 up.
Fulham then added to their two goal lead and Eric Nevland swivelled and shot from a pulled back cross for his second of the match, which seemed to put the game out of sight.
But Portsmouth didn’t give up and on 84 minutes David Nugent scored his second of the season, after heading in Jermaine Pennants free-kick. But the comeback came to nothing and Fulham held on comfortably to a 3-1 win.

Stoke 1-0 Man. City
MATCH Report
Stoke managed to pull off what could be deemed a surprising win over City at the Britannia Stadium yesterday. The win was made even more shocking since Stoke had been reduced to ten men early on in the game, long-thrower Delap sent off after just 38 minutes.
Stoke started in their usual battling style, and Man. City attempted to use their passing game to take them apart. City started with the lion’s share of possession but neither Robinho nor Ireland could capitalise to put them in the lead.
Unsurprisingly, a Delap throw gave Stoke their best chance of the first half but Glenn Whelan failed to keep his header down.
Delap was then sent off after reacting badly to a Wright-Phillips challenge. The midfielder lashed out at the winger right after he had just got his own back after a similarly aggressive challenge.
Understandably, City controlled the game possession-wise after the sending off, but right before half-time, Stoke’s new winger beat City’s new left back Bridge to deliver for Beattie to head home.
City struggled to equalise against a resolute Stoke side in the second half. Elano, who came on off the bench almost found Ireland with a cross-shot, before Richards came agonisingly short of latching onto a Robinho cross. Andy Grifffin’s fantastic challenge then kept Stoke in the lead with Richards again bearing down on goal.
All in all, Stoke battled past a poor City side with Beattie notching his second in three games to lift them out of the relegation zone.
