    January Transfers: Club-by-Club

    Article by deej3005

    Arsenal

    In-Andrei Arshavin-Zenit St.Petersburg

Arshavin will be one of the Gunners’ key players this season.  This transfer alone is unlikely to save Arsenal’s season, but the fact that Arshavin has joined may spur Arsenal on to finishing in the top four and achieving something in the Champions League.

    Transfer Rating: 4.5/5

    Out-Jay Simpson-West Brom-loan

    Out-Gavin Hoyte-Watford-loan

    Out-Paul Rodgers-Northampton-loan

    Out-Rui Fonte-Crystal Palace-loan

    Out-Henri Lansbury-Scunthorpe-loan

    Aston Villa

    In-Emile Heskey-Wigan-£3.5M

The big England striker joined O’Neill’s side for a bargain 3.5m. With Carew and Agbonlahor already available, Heskey may not play every game, but he is very good at holding up the ball, bringing others into play and playing alongside a smaller, speedier forward such as Agbonlahor. He’s already got his Villa career off to a good start with a goal on his debut, this is an excellent coup by O’Neill.

    Transfer rating: 5/5

    Out-Wayne Routledge-QPR-loan

The little winger simply wasn’t playing at Villa, and had to go somewhere to get his career back on track. From villa’s point of view, this loan move is not a bad thing, as Routledge might be able to get into some form and show us all some of the potential that he displayed at Crystal Palace.

    Transfer rating: 4/5

    Out-Sam Williams-Walsall-loan

    Blackburn Rovers

    In-Gael Givet-Marseille-loan

Ok, so this isn’t a permanent signing, but Givet should add competition to the Rovers back line, where Nelsen and Samba have made the CB positions their own. The defender certainly isn’t bad and could find himself featuring a fair bit for Balckburn this year.

    Transfer rating: 3/5

    In-El-Hadji Diouf-Sunderland-£2M

Diouf should be a good signing for Blackburn, who don’t seem to have a definite partner for Roque Santa Cruz. Despite his nasty temperament, he’s a skillful player who should slot in just behind Santa Cruz. With Diouf making darting runs and teeing up Santa Cruz, the two could form a good partnership.

    Transfer rating: 3/5

    Out-Eddie Nolan-Preston-undisclosed

    Out-Sergio Peter-Sparta Prague-undisclosed

    Out-Frank Fielding-Rochdale-loan

    Out-Jamie Clarke-Rotherham-free

    Bolton Wanderers

    In-Sebastien Puygrenier-Zenit St. Petersburg-loan

Gary Megson’s pulled off a great deal here. Puygrenier will most likely support Gary Cahill at the back, and given that he featured quite regularly for Zenit when they won the UEFA Cup this is a good piece of business.

    Transfer rating: 4/5

    In-Ariza Makukula-Benfica-loan

    In-Mark Davies-Wolves-£1M

    Out-Heidar Helguson-QPR-undisclosed

    Out-Kevin Nolan-Newcastle-£4.5M

    Chelsea

    In-Ricardo Quaresma-Inter Milan-loan

So Jose Mourinho decided to give his old club a helping hand? Well, I’m not sure how much of a help this will be, but Scolari obviously feels the left wing is a problem. No one doubts Quaresma’s ability, but the winger can be inconsistent and has never played in England before. If Scolari believes he has signed the answer to his prayers, he has taken a big gamble.

    Transfer rating: 2/5

    In-Gokhan Tore-Bayer Leverkusen-undisclosed

    Out-Jack Cork-Watford-loan

    Out-Wayne Bridge-Manchester City-undisclosed

    Out-Ben Sahar-De Graafschap-loan

    Out-Scott Sinclair-Birmingham-loan

    Out-Carlo Cudicini-Tottenham-free

    Out-Lee Sawyer-Coventy-loan

    Out-Carl Magnay-MK Dons-loan

    Everton

    In-Jo-Manchester City-loan

The arrival of Craig Bellamy at Eastlands has signaled the departure of Jo, at least until the end of the season, that is. With Yakubu effectively injured until then as well, Jo is an important signing for City, even if it remains to be seen whether he can adapt to the Premiership.

    Transfer rating: 4/5

    In-Troy Archibald-Herville-Tottenham-loan

    Out-Lee Molyneux-Southampton-free

    Out-John Ruddy-Crewe-loan

    Fulham

    In-Giles Barnes-Derby-loan

As anyone who caught a glimpse of Barnes when Derby were in the Premiership will know, he is an exciting young talent. His free-kick against United shows us that his skills have certainly not faded away, but he has struggled with injuries of late. Therefore, this is a good move by Fulham, and should Barnes sign for them on a permanent basis, he may well go on to become one of their key players in years to come.

    Transfer rating: 5/5

    In-Olivier Dacourt-Inter Milan-loan

    In-Julian Gray-Coventry-loan

    Out-Adrian Leijer-Norwich-loan

    Out-T.J.Moncur-Wycombe-free

    Out-Hameur Bouazza-Birmingham-loan

    Out-Seol Ki-Hyeon-Al-Hilal-loan

    Out-Jimmy Bullard-Hull-£5M

    Out-Leon Andreasen-Hannover 96-loan

    Out-Andranik Teymourian-Barnsley-loan

    Hull City

    In-Kevin Kilbane-Wigan-undisclosed

Kilbane is a decent left-back who is just as adept at playing on the left side of midfield. He’s a decent, but unspectacular addition to the Hull squad, who clearly want to strengthen their defence to keep up their excellent start in the Premiership. A useful addition to the squad.

    Transfer rating: 3/5

    In-Manucho-Manchester United-loan

The strong, Angolan centre-forward wasn’t getting enough games at United and so decided to temporararily join Hull. He adds strength and pace to Hull’s front line, and it’s a smart bit of business for the Tigers, who also have the likes of Daniel Cousin to choose from in attack.

    Transfer rating: 3/5

    In-Jimmy Bullard-Fulham–£5M

No doubt about it, Bullard will slot right into Hull’s midfield like fat Ronaldo’s teeth in a piece of cake. The crazy-haired midfielder was on great from at Fulham, and will be one of Hull’s best players. The only negative results of this transfer are the fact that Bullard is 30, so £5M is perhaps quite a lot to pay, but Hull have bought themselves a playmaker who is proven in the Premiership.

    Transfer rating: 4/5

    In-Kamil Zayatte-Young Boys Berne-£2.5M

    Out-Dean Windass-Oldham-loan

    Out-Wayne Brown-Leicester-loan

    Liverpool

    Out-Jermaine Pennant-Portsmouth-loan

    Out-Craig Lindfield-Accrington Stanley-loan

    Out-Krisztian Nemeth-Blackpool-loan

    Out-Robbie Keane-Tottenham-£12M

This is the big one. The Irish striker was frozen out at Liverpool and packed back off to White Hart Lane for £8M pounds less than he came for. Naturally, the loss of £8M makes this an unfortunate transfer for Liverpool. The fact that Keane was only given as many appearances as he was by Benitez, which then led to him being sold off after a few months, was downright absurd when you consider that he was a player who had managed much greater things in the same league with Spurs. Liverpool are now left with just N’gog to provide Torres for company, or playing Gerrard just behind will be a necessity.

    Transfer rating: 1/5

    Out-Peter Gulacsi-Hereford-loan

    Out-Adam Hammill-Barnsley-loan

    Manchester City

    In-Wayne Bridge-Chelsea-£12M

    In-Craig Bellamy-West Ham-£14M

    In-Nigel de Jong-Hamburg-£17M

    In-Shay Given-Newcastle Utd-undisclosed

Given had been a wall between the posts for some time at Newcastle, and with the team performing poorly, it’s unsurprising that he’s moved on to a club with a brighter future. Given should take over from Hart, and although the latter is a young gem, Given is a top-class shot-stopper and an excellent signing.

    Transfer rating: 5/5

    Out-Sam Williamson-Wrexham-loan

    Out-Javan Vidal-Aberdeen-loan

    Out-Paul Marshall-Blackpool

    Out-Tal Ben-Haim-Sunderland-loan

    Manchester United

    In-Zoran Tosic-Partizan Belgrade-undisclosed

Tosic is a highly rated central midfielder, and if Ferguson’s recent signings(Evra, Vidic) are anything to go by, he could turn out to be the next Paul Scholes. He is still relatively unknown at this moment in time, but he’s already made 8 appearances for Serbia at the age of 21 and is definitely one to look out for in the United team.

    Transfer rating: 2/5

    In-Adem Ljajic-Partizan Belgrade-undisclosed

    In-Ritchie De Laet-Stoke City-undisclosed

    Out-David Gray-Middlesbrough-loan

    Out-Sam Hewson-Hereford-loan

    Out-Manucho-Hull City-loan

    Out-Tom Cleverley-Leicester-loan

    Out-James Chester-Peterborough-loan

    Middlesbrough

    In-Marlon King-Wigan-loan

This is the biggest signing that Boro have made in the transfer window, and with players like Tuncay, Afonso Alves, and Aliadiere all fellow forwards, they would have done better to strengthen elsewhere.

    Transfer rating: 2/5

    Out-Seb Hines-Derby-loan

    Out-Jonathan Grounds-Norwich-loan

    Out-Graeme Owens-Blackpool-loan

    Out-Tom Craddock-Luton-£80k

    Newcastle United

    In-Kevin Nolan-Newcastle-£4.5M

Kevin Nolan had been Bolton’s main man in midfield for some time, and with N’Zogbia expressing a wish to go away from the Toon, some extra midfielders were necessary. With Barton, Guthrie, Butt, Gutierrez etc. Available, Nolan may not play every single game, but he is like a more experienced, better version of Danny Guthrie. A good passer of the ball who also chips in with some goals, Nolan should do well at Newcastle.

    Transfer rating: 4/5

    In-Ryan Taylor-Wigan-swap

    Out-Charles N’Zogbia-Wigan-swap

    Portsmouth

    In-Nadir Belhadj-Lens-£4.4M

    In-Jermaine Pennant-Liverpool-loan

    In-Hayden Mullins-West Ham-£2M

    In-Pele-Porto-loan

    In-Angelos Basinas-AEK Athens-undisclosed

    In-Theofanis Gekas-Bayer Leverkusen-loan

    Out-Lassana Diarra-Real Madrid-£20M

The French defensive midfielder is certainly one for the future, a possible future France regular. But who would have thought he’d seal a £20M move to Real Madrid? The strong, tough-tackling player has already looked good in his first few games there, but I can’t help but think that Tony Adams would have pocketed the £20M with glee. One or two big money players out, and 5 or 6 players in is good work by the Pompey boss.

    Transfer rating: 4/5

    Out-Jermain Defoe-Tottenham-£15M

    Out-Khaleem Hyland-Zulte Waregem-loan

    Stoke City

    In-Matthew Etherington-West Ham-£2M

This diminutive winger jumped ship in January from West Ham to Stoke, a place where he is almost guaranteed first team football. He hasn’t looked bad in his first few games at all, and while he may not be the quickest, he packs a good cross to supply forwards James Beattie and Dave Kitson.

    Transfer rating: 4/5

    In-James Beattie-Sheff. United-£3.75M

    In-Henri Camara-Wigan-loan

    Out-Ritchie De Laet-Manchester United-undisclosed

    Out-Nathaniel Wedderburn-Notts County-loan

    Out-Tom Soares-Charlton-loan

    Out-Carl Dickinson-Leeds-loan

    Out-Ryan Shotton-Tranmere-loan

    Out-Lewis Buton-Sheffield Wednesday-small fee

    Sunderland

    In-Calum Davenport-West Ham-loan

    In-Tal Ben-Haim-Manchester City-loan

Sunderland needed to bolster their back line, and so have signed Ben Haim on loan from City. The centre-back had become fourth choice there, but should begin to start games at the Stadium of Light. Players like Nyron Nosworthy have always been not quite up to Premiership standard, so this is a good signing by Sbragia.

    Transfer rating: 4/5

    Out-Roy O’Donovan-Blackpool-loan

    Out-Graham Kavanagh-Carlisle-free

    Out-Liam Miller-QPR-loan

    Out-Pascal Chimbonda-Tottenham-£2.5M

    Out-El-Hadji Diouf-Blackburn-£2M

    Out-Michael Chopra-Sunderland-loan

    Tottenham Hotspur

    In-Jermain Defoe-Portsmouth-£15M

There must be something about the friendly atmosphere at White Hart Lane that brings players back to the club. And unlike Robbie Keane, Defoe actually achieved something at his new club. The forward is lightning quick, and could form a good partnership with Pavlyuchenko, but he also has Bent and Keane to contend with. £15M is a lot to pay, but I can’t see Defoe letting Spurs down.

    Transfer rating: 3/5

    In-Wilson Palacios-Wigan-£12M

    In-Pascal Chimbonda-Sunderland-£2.5M

    In-Carlo Cudicini-Chelsea-free

    In-Robbie Keane-Liverpool-£12M

    Out-Paul Stalteri-Borussia Monchengladbach-free

    Out-Kevin Prince-Boateng-Borussia Dortmund-loan

    Out-David Button-Bournemouth-loan

    Out-Tony Archibald-Herville-Everton-loan

    Out-Cesar Sanchez-Valencia-undisclosed

    Out-Hossam Ghaly-Nassr Saudi Club-undisclosed

    West Brom

    In-Jay Simpson-Arsenal-loan

Hardly an eye-catcher, but the biggest signing the Baggies have made in the transfer window is to sign Jay Simpson on loan from Arsenal. The big forward has impressed in his first few games, and after scoring twice against Wigan in the Carling Cup, he knows how it’s done.

    Transfer rating: 3/5

    In-Marc-Antoine Fortune-Nancy-loan

    In-Youssouf Mulumbu-PSG-loan

    Out-Jose Labadie-Shrewsbury-loan

    Out-Lee Baker-Kidderminster-loan

    Out-Sherjill Macdonald-Roeselare-loan

    West Ham

    In-Savio Nsereko-Brescia-£10M

The young German winger cost the Hammers a lot of money, but is a big talent. While still in his teens, Nsereko was getting plenty of games at Brescia, and while he may have to wait a bit before breaking into the West Ham first team, it may not be long before he is linked with a move to a top club.

    Transfer rating: 4/5

    Out-Joe Widdowson-Grimsby-loan

    Out-Matthew Etherington-Stoke City-£2M

    Out-Lee Bowyer-Birmingham-loan

    Out-Kyel Reid-Wolves-loan

    Out-Craig Bellamy-Manchester City-£14M

    Out-Hayden Mullins-Portsmouth-£2M

    Out-Julien Faubert-Real Madrid-loan

    Out-Calum Davenport-Sunderland-loan

    Wigan

    In-Hugo Rodallega-Necaxa-£4.5M

    In-Ben Watson-Crystal Palace-£2M

    Out-Lewis Montrose-Cheltenham-loan

    Out-Luke Ashworth-Leyton Orient-free

    Out-Kevin Kilbane-Hull-undisclosed

    Out-Wilson Palacios-Tottenham-£12M

Palacios is a creative force in midfield, more an attacking midfielder than a defensive-minded one, Palacios suits Tottenham’s style of play and may be expected to play in the Modric role when the Croatian is unavailable. £12M seems a fair price for both teams.

    Transfer rating: 3/5

    Out-Marlon King-Wigan-loan

    Out-Emile Heskey-Aston Villa-£3.5M

    Out-Henri Camara-Stoke-loan
